…LOVE YOURSELF!..

Start with Art

Gotham Professional Arts Academy is a high school for kids who are interested in the field of arts and it’s headed by principal, Rob Michelin, who says “it is for the artistic innovators and culture curators of the future”.

Whether it’s theater, fashion, graphic design, painting or performing, this specialty high school is for students who have a goal set to achieve.

I had the pleasure to visit Gotham Professional Arts Academy for their annual, “Love Yourself Day”, with creative activities headed by intern, Sarah Stokes. The staff and children come together for a day of learning to love yourself and the many abilities and talents each student possess.  The day starts off with a potluck, then the students create a necklace with oaktag and string and write on it why they love themselves.  Then the students are able to choose a couple of workshops that are presented to them, and afterwards, enjoy a talent show put on by their peers.  Many of them sang, rhymed and even put on a skit!

Uncutt Art, @uncuttart, artist, designer and spiritual consultant, were one of the guest speakers.  His motto and clothing line, “Protect Yo HeArt” @protectyoheart, is described as, loving your mind, body and soul and taking care of yourself.  When one loves themselves from within, it’s easier to spread the love.  The hashtag, as it’s written, #ProtectYoHeArt, is a lifestyle.  Another one of his tags that adorns his gear which he designs is, “Too Many Humans, Not Enuf Soul.”

The classes at this school are far more interesting than at your average high school and focus on what the students are interested in.  The instructors actually work in the field as well as working with the students in the classrooms. Sheila Patel, who works with the Graffiti Collective cosmetics line, which is a plant based, cruelty free, skincare brand, has a weekly workshop, teaching business and branding.

Jeff Beler, @jeffbeler, a local curator of street art, who has a permanent installation near the Brooklyn Library, @underhillwalls, as well as working with other schools ((PS9, PS321, BASE School, St Francis College and the Achievement First Charter School, to name a few) to produce their murals inside and out. Jeff also teaches a mural club at the moment, an has been working to increase his role.

Like many schools, Gotham Professional Arts Academy also hosts, Career Day, which is important to our future generation.  Their classes are on the smaller side and so the professors work very closely with their students. If your children are serious about the arts, it is highly suggested for them to look into attending Gotham Professional Arts Academy.https://www.gothamacademy.org/  Located at 561 Grand Ave., in the ADELPHI section of BK.
